Got a question about orthodontic treatment? Don't worry, here at Nice Bite Orthodontics we get lots of them from our patients. What's more, we're happy to answer all of them.
Below are some of the common questions we get asked. If you don't find the answer to your question here, just drop us a line and we'll do our best to answer it for you.
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry which looks at straightening a person's teeth and ensuring the correct alignment of their jaw. This is really important as correctly aligned jaws are needed to help you chew food properly.
What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?
Both dental professionals are concerned with your oral health, but an orthodontist has embarked on postgraduate study in the specialist area of orthodontics, in addition to an undergraduate degree in dentistry. A dentist focuses mainly on the ongoing care of your teeth, checking for cavities and looking for any signs of damage or wear and tear to your teeth. An orthodontist looks at the alignment of your teeth and jaw in relation to your facial profile.
How do I know if I need orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment can be beneficial for a range of problems. The most common ones are crowding and spacing issues and those related to misaligned bites, such as an over or underbite.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
The length of orthodontic treatment does depend on your individual case. Most major cases take between 12 and 24 months, but minor teeth affecting the front teeth can take as little as six months.
Is orthodontic treatment expensive?
Orthodontic treatment is an investment but we help to make it affordable with flexible payment plans.
Do you offer Invisalign?
Yes we do offer Invisalign and have been recognised for our specialty and experience using this virtually invisible treatment method. At Nice Bite Orthodontics we have Platinum Elite provider status. You can find out more about Invisalign in our treatments section.
As an adult am I too old for treatment?
No, you're never too old for treatment. Here at Nice Bite Orthodontics we have achieved some great results for all our adult patients. Find out more about adult orthodontic treatment here.
Should I bring my child in for orthodontic treatment?
Yes. The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends this, and so do we. By bringing them, we can determine if there will be enough room in your child’s mouth in the future for all their adult teeth. It also means we can take action now to prevent more complicated issues from developing, including the need for tooth extraction due to overcrowding.
Why might my child need orthodontics?
An early consultation can allow our orthodontist, Dr Divya Sriram, to detect if there is a malocclusion (bad bite). A properly aligned bite means that when the mouth is closed the top teeth lay outside the bottom teeth, and the points of the upper molars fit nicely into the grooves of the lower molars. Many things can cause an improperly aligned bite. The most common is simply genetics—that is, a child just naturally develops a misaligned bite. Other causes can include finger and thumb sucking, and mouth breathing.
Can I still brush my teeth while wearing braces?
Yes you can and it's vital that you do. Keeping your teeth clean is an important part of the success of your orthodontic treatment.
How do I book an appointment?
Here at Nice Bite Orthodontics, we offer our patients a orthodontic consultation so they can find out what treatment would suit them. There is no obligation to proceed with treatment after this appointment, but it's our way of ensuring you can make an informed decision.
